Training Banca de las Oportunidades Teams to Map Financial Inclusion in Colombia

We were commissioned by CGAP to support Banca de las Oportunidades in Colombia with comprehensive training on financial inclusion mapping. The project focused on equipping teams to collect and geolocate financial agents, enabling a better understanding of cash-in and cash-out (CICO) networks across the country.

Why This Matters

Access to financial services remains uneven in Colombia, particularly in rural and underserved areas. By building capacity in geospatial analysis, Banca de las Oportunidades can identify gaps, target interventions, and promote greater financial inclusion for all Colombians.

Our Approach

  • Geospatial Training:
Delivered practical training on data collection, GIS, and mapping techniques tailored to financial inclusion.

  • Data Science Applications:
Introduced methodologies for analysing agent locations and identifying underserved regions.

  • Ongoing Support:
Provided resources and guidance to ensure teams could independently update and expand their analyses.

Results and Impact

The training has enabled Banca de las Oportunidades to make data-driven decisions, expand financial access, and support economic empowerment throughout Colombia.

MASAE collaborated with GIZ to develop a centralised, open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) for managing irrigation channels in Iraq. The platform was designed to streamline the monitoring and maintenance of water infrastructure, supporting sustainable resource management in a region where efficient water use is critical.

UNICEF Mozambique commissioned MASAE in 2022 to conduct a Child Centred Risk Assessment (CCRA) alongside a Climate Change Vulnerability Analysis (CCVA). The project aimed to map the risks and vulnerabilities faced by children, including those linked to climate change, and to provide actionable recommendations for minimising impact and mitigating risks.
