Geographical Information System (GIS) for Irrigation Channels in Iraq

MASAE collaborated with GIZ to develop a centralised, open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) for managing irrigation channels in Iraq. The platform was designed to streamline the monitoring and maintenance of water infrastructure, supporting sustainable resource management in a region where efficient water use is critical.

Why This Matters

Irrigation channels are vital for agriculture and food security in Iraq, yet their management is often hampered by fragmented data and manual processes. By introducing a unified GIS platform, MASAE and GIZ have enabled stakeholders to visualise, analyse, and maintain irrigation networks more effectively, helping to safeguard water resources and improve agricultural productivity.

Our Approach

  • Open-Source GIS Platform:
Developed and deployed a centralised GIS server with a unified data model, allowing seamless integration and management of spatial data related to irrigation assets.

  • Field Data Collection:
Provided tools for collecting and updating information directly from the field, ensuring up-to-date and accurate data for decision-making.

  • Custom Workflows:
Designed processes to facilitate asset monitoring, maintenance scheduling, and reporting within an intuitive digital environment.

Results and Impact

The solution has improved asset visibility, enabled proactive maintenance, and provided a robust foundation for evidence-based water management strategies.

MASAE, in partnership with GIZ and Altai Consulting, supported the Tunisian Central Bank and the Financial Inclusion Observatory (OIF) in defining financial inclusion indicators and in developing a dedicated platform to collect and display data, and make it available to sector stakeholders.

We were commissioned by CGAP to support Banca de las Oportunidades in Colombia with comprehensive training on financial inclusion mapping. The project focused on equipping teams to collect and geolocate financial agents, enabling a better understanding of cash-in and cash-out (CICO) networks across the country.
