Somalia DDR: Demobilised Fighters Mapping

MASAE supported the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Somalia by mapping the trajectories of demobilised fighters as part of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme. The project aimed to better understand the movements and reintegration prospects of former Al Shabaab soldiers.

Why This Matters

Effective reintegration of former combatants is essential for long-term peace and security in Somalia. Mapping their trajectories enables stakeholders to design targeted support programmes, monitor progress, and address potential risks associated with the DDR process.

Our Approach

  • Data Science and GIS:
Collected and analysed data on ex-combatants’ movements using advanced mapping and geospatial techniques.

  • Platform Development:
Built a digital platform to visualise and track the reintegration process.

  • Stakeholder Engagement:
Worked closely with IOM and local partners to ensure the findings informed DDR interventions.

Results and Impact

The mapping exercise provided critical insights into the reintegration journey of demobilised fighters, supporting more effective policy and programme design for peace building in Somalia.
