Deforestation Assessment in the Sahel Region

MASAE partnered with AFD to assess deforestation in the Sahel region, with a focus on Niger. The project aimed to monitor forest resources using advanced satellite data and ground truthing techniques, providing vital insights for sustainable land management.

Why This Matters

Deforestation in the Sahel is a growing concern, driven by the increasing demand for wood as a cooking fuel and mounting pressure on forest resources. Accurate monitoring is essential for developing effective policies to protect these critical ecosystems and support local communities.

Our Approach

  • Satellite Data and Remote Sensing:
Used high-resolution satellite imagery to track changes in forest cover over time.

  • Ground Truth Verification:
Combined satellite analysis with on-the-ground observations to ensure data accuracy.

  • Platform Development:
Built digital tools to visualise and share findings with stakeholders.

Results and Impact

The assessment provided actionable data to inform conservation strategies, helping stakeholders address the root causes of deforestation and promote sustainable use of natural resources.
