Impact Assessment of Irrigation Networks Restoration in Anbar, Iraq

GIZ gave MASAE the mission to assess the impact of irrigation network restoration efforts in Anbar governorate, Iraq. The project focused on evaluating the effectiveness of rehabilitated irrigation canals in supporting agricultural productivity and local livelihoods.

Why This Matters

Restoring irrigation infrastructure is vital for food security and economic recovery in post-conflict regions. In Anbar, efficient water management is essential for revitalising agriculture, sustaining communities, and fostering long-term stability.

Our Approach

  • Ground Truthing and Data Science:
Combined field surveys with satellite data to accurately measure changes in irrigation coverage and crop yields.

  • GIS & Mapping:
Visualised the extent and impact of restored networks, providing clear insights for stakeholders.

  • Contextual Analysis:
Assessed how restored irrigation supports peace, livelihoods, and economic cycles in the region.

Results and Impact

The assessment provided robust evidence of the benefits of irrigation restoration, guiding future investments and supporting sustainable development in Anbar.
